Who will win? PlayStation Move, Xbox360 Kinect or the good ole Wii?
I have not had the chance to play the PlayStation Move or the Xbox360 Kinect yet so I’m writing this article more on an anticipating consumer viewpoint and looking at the information and trailers available. So let’s look at this in a few areas:
Arena 1 – Cost of the systems:
PlayStation Move
PlayStation Move Champion Bundle = $99.99 includes
- PlayStation Move motion controller
- PlayStation Eye Camera
- Sports Champions Blu-ray disc
Now these new systems should be played in groups so enabling up to four players you’ll also need:
3 PlayStation Move motion controllers @ $49.99 each = $149.97
4 PlayStation Move navigation controllers @ $29.99 each = $119.96
Average cost of games @ $39.99, let’s say you get two more = $79.98
Total cost = $449.90
Xbox360 Kinect
Kinect = $149.99
Average cost of game $59.99, let’s say you get three so the same as above = $179.97
Total cost = $329.96
Basically a similar functional system will cost you $119.94 more for a PlayStation Move system and that doesn’t include all the other accessories you may want with it like gun attachments, extra cables and a charging station.
Wii
Cost = nothing extra
Verdict on cost?
Without being too silly, of course the Wii wins on cost, but if you’re comparing the two new systems then Kinect has a significant advantage. Even with the Kinect over $300 just to get in there is still a lot of moola.
Arena 2 – The Games @ Launch
PlayStation Move games:
Kung Fu Rider
SingStar Dance
Sport Champions
Start the Party
The Fight: Lights Out
The Shoot
TV Superstars
Sorcery
Kinect for Xbox360 games:
Kinect Adventures
Kinectimals
Kinect Joy Ride
Kinect Sports
Dance Central
Wii – Upcoming Cool Games
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Metroid: Other M
Donkey Kong Country Returns (just love the simplicity of the name generation)
Verdict on games?
Wii games are cool, but are they significantly different to tackle the new games? Not really.
For Kinect vs Move, the Move has a lot more games to offer. Are they better? They overall look better, but Kinect has the potential game breaker in Dance Central. Purely looking at the features and trailers, Dance Central looks infinitely more fun than SingStar Dance. Having four friends dancing around you with glowing bubble wands is pretty daring, I’m putting my bet on smaller parties or even people who just want to dance alone to really drive the sales of new dance games.
Anyway, I’m taking the middle ground on this one, I’m going to say that Kinect and Move are even on the game front at launch.
Coolness factor / X-factors
I don’t care what kind of commercials or even if you had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing with the Move, it just doesn’t look cool at all. Also, after playing games with no controllers at all who would want to be tied down with the burden of using and storing so many more controllers and peripherals???! I know not me and if I don’t then I’m guessing there’s a lot of other gamers and gamers-to-be out there that probably feel the same way.
And the Wii? They’re revolutionizing with their 3DS, but we won’t compare that system with these. The Wii has not changed their motion scheme and their new games aren’t breaking much new ground with the use of this technology.
Verdict on Coolness / X-factors? Kinect for Xbox360 wins.
So who is the overall winner? For the new systems Kinect wins on cost and coolness. Move and Kinect tie on launch games for now.
Kinect for Xbox360 Wins!!! This is my prediction, let’s see if I’m right.

Xbox 360 Kinect Wins Hand Down.
